Titanium dioxide, scientifically known as titanium dioxide, is a high-quality white pigment and additive. It has excellent performance characteristics, such as high hiding power, excellent dispersibility, excellent light resistance, heat resistance, alkali resistance, and weather resistance. It is widely used in coatings, plastics, inks, papermaking, cosmetics and other fields. Its main component, titanium dioxide, has two crystal structures: anatase and rutile. Due to its high hiding power and whiteness, titanium dioxide is used as a white pigment in industry, giving products excellent hiding power and color. It has stable chemical properties, good weather resistance and heat resistance, and can withstand various climate and temperature changes. These characteristics make titanium dioxide occupy an irreplaceable position in ink formulations.
1. Improve the whiteness and hiding power of ink. Impurity ions, especially metal ions such as trace iron, chromium, cobalt, copper and other impurities mixed into titanium dioxide will distort the crystal structure of titanium dioxide, which may cause color deviation and reduced whiteness of ink. Rutile titanium dioxide is more sensitive to impurities. For example, iron oxide can show color when the content in rutile titanium dioxide is greater than 0.003%, while it needs to be greater than 0.009% in anatase titanium dioxide to show color. Therefore, it is very important to choose pure titanium dioxide. Secondly, the shape, size and distribution of titanium dioxide particles have an impact on whiteness. Ideal iron dioxide particles should be smooth and without edges and corners, which will reduce the reflection of light and reduce whiteness. Particles with a size of 0.2~0.4μm (approximately equal to 1/2 of the wavelength of visible light) can obtain high scattering ability and increase whiteness. Too small or too large a particle size will affect the whiteness of the ink. Therefore, titanium dioxide particles are required to be of moderate size and evenly distributed. Titanium dioxide, due to its high refractive index and good light scattering properties, can make the ink fully reflect light under light, presenting a bright white color. In printed materials that require high whiteness, such as newspapers and magazines, titanium dioxide can significantly improve the visual effect and aesthetics. In addition, its strong hiding power can effectively cover the background color of the paper, making the printed pattern clearer.
2. Enhance the wear resistance and weather resistance of inks Titanium dioxide has high hardness, good chemical stability and thermal stability, which makes the inks added with titanium dioxide perform well in wear resistance and weather resistance. In the fields of outdoor advertising, signage, packaging printing, etc., inks often need to withstand harsh environments such as wind, rain, sun and rain, and the addition of titanium dioxide can significantly improve the weather resistance of inks and effectively slow down the color fading and wear caused by factors such as light, humidity and temperature.
3. Improve the drying and adhesion of ink Titanium dioxide has a large surface area and strong surface activity, which enables it to play a certain role in promoting drying and enhancing adhesion in ink. During the printing process, titanium dioxide can interact with binders, additives and other ingredients to promote the rapid drying of ink and improve printing efficiency. At the same time, titanium dioxide can also closely bond with the surface of paper, improve the adhesion of ink on paper, and prevent ink from falling off or cracking.
4. Adjust the gloss and rheology of ink The tinting power of titanium dioxide mainly depends on its scattering ability of visible light, which is directly related to the tinting power of ink. The larger the scattering coefficient, the stronger the tinting power of titanium dioxide. In addition, the refractive index of titanium dioxide is also an important factor in determining its tinting power. The higher the refractive index, the stronger the tinting power. Among white pigments, the refractive index of titanium dioxide is in a leading position, among which the refractive index of rutile titanium dioxide is higher than that of anatase. Therefore, in order to ensure the best coloring effect, titanium dioxide with strong scattering ability and high refractive index should be preferred. By finely adjusting the particle size and addition amount of titanium dioxide, we can effectively control the gloss of the ink and achieve a variety of effects from matte to high gloss. Not only that, the addition of titanium dioxide also has a positive effect on the rheology of the ink, which can improve the stability and printing adaptability of the ink to a certain extent.
Modern industry pays more and more attention to environmental protection and safety performance, and titanium dioxide, as a non-toxic and odorless substance, conforms to this development trend. It does not contain heavy metal ions and radioactive substances that are harmful to the human body and is harmless to the human body. Because the chemical properties of titanium dioxide are stable and it is not easy to react chemically with other substances, the risk of ink deterioration or production of harmful substances during use is reduced.
